Flashback Friday: Traveling Photos

Posted on 05:00 by Guy
After buying a house last summer, Tall Paul and I agreed that we'd keep our Christmas 2013 gifts to each other pretty low-key (although we did purchase a very nice new set of cookware as a "to us, from us" present). I asked him for just one thing: to select a couple of his own photos that he especially liked, and frame them for me to hang in my office.

He chose these two from our New England trip last June, highlighting the tranquility of New Hampshire's White Mountains and the glorious architectural hubbub of downtown Boston. They're in my office now--propped against the wall until I get someone to come and put them up.

Flashback Friday: What I Read in 2013

Posted on 11:00 by Guy
I'm working on my 2013 wrap-ups--reading stats, surveys, Books of the Year picks, et cetera, which I'll be posting here across the next week--and thought I'd give you a snapshot of the books I've tagged as "2013review" on LibraryThing.

book covers 2013 reviews 3RsBlog LibraryThing

The numbers don't match perfectly with my "books read in 2013" stats on GoodReads--there are a few things we call "reconciling items" in accounting-speak--and I did fall just shy of my overall one-book-per-week target, but overall I'm not too unhappy with this picture of My Year in Books.

Flashback Friday: Casual Meets Cosplay

Posted on 08:30 by Guy
It is a total cheat to call this a Flashback Friday shot, since I just took it this morning...but because I am wearing a time machine, I'm taking it. The "Exploding TARDIS" pencil skirt, with its Van Gogh-inspired print referencing the Series 5 episode "Vincent and the Doctor," is letting me sneak a little cosplay into the office today. (30 days till the Doctor Who 50th-anniversary special, y'all!)

Friday Flashback: 7th* Anniversary Edition

Posted on 08:00 by Guy
Seven* years ago this weekend, this guy and I married each other. We're both taking the day off on Monday, our actual anniversary, to wander around town and enjoy each other's company. I don't think we'll get quite this dressed up, though.

26--Happy Anniversary! Love you, 28

Foto Flashback: This weekend, 2005

Posted on 05:00 by Guy
The Wordless Wednesday gang has decided to photo-blog twice a week, so welcome to our first Flashback Friday! This photo was taken by my husband near his family's fishing cabin in the eastern Sierras at just this time of year, eight years ago--the edits are all my fault, though.

Holiday scenes from The Grove/Farmers Market and my house--collage made with PicFrame
Inside and out, the holiday season has officially arrived! (And yes, we really do have those books under the tree...but no one reads them.)

This is my favorite Christmas scene in my house this year, though:

How are your holiday preparations coming along?

Post #1799: Finishing Unfinished Business

Posted on 05:00 by Guy
As you probably inferred from the title, I'm on the threshold of another posting milestone--one that probably doesn't mean much except that it's another number ending in zero. However, it did prompt me to calculate whether I'd reach 2000 posts here by my 6th blogiversary on March 16, 2013. That would require daily posting for the next 134 days, with two new posts on 66 of those days...which is seriously unlikely to happen, so those two milestones will not coincide. And this pre-milestone post is essentially a placeholder to catch up on a few unrelated matters.

Matter #1:
In case you missed it, yesterday was National Author's Day (November 1, every year since 1949). It was also the day that the winners of the first Shirley You Jest! Book Awards were announced--and in case you missed that too, here they are, no joking:
Shirley LOL (1st place):
Fiction: Pickin’ Tomatoes by J.W. Bull
Nonfiction: Ketchup is a Vegetable: And Other Lies Moms Tell Themselves by Robin O’Bryant
Shirley HAH (2nd place):
Fiction: What Would Satan Do? by Anthony Miller
Nonfiction: Confessions of an Edgy Suburban Mom by Pam Grimes

Shirley You Jest! Book Awards official logo
Presented by Liz D Publicity & Promotions, the SYJ! Book Awards were created to honor books by self-published and traditionally published independent authors that "bring the funny.”  Authors of fiction and non-fiction with strong comedic and humorous elements were invited to enter the 2012 contest to win book-promotion opportunities from its sponsors. Entries for the next contest will be accepted beginning June 1, 2013.

(Disclosure: I was a Nonfiction judge in the first round of the SYJ! Book Awards. and although I didn't review any of the contenders I considered, I'm excited that my submission to the finals scored the HAH!)

Matter #2:
My #FMSPhotoaday participation was spotty during October, but I wanted share five of my favorite pictures from the month (not all from the daily photo meme, but all previously posted on Instagram).

Matter #3:
This won't actually be finished till 2 AM this Sunday (11/4)--Daylight Savings Time is ending! Remember to set your clocks back one hour, and claim that extra sleep time this weekend!

Friday Foto (Edits): Getting From Here to There

Posted on 05:00 by Guy
Less than 24 hours after arriving in New York City almost two weeks ago, I was on a Statue Cruises ferry with Kim, Lu, and Teresa, off to visit Ellis Island (although Kim and Lu stopped off to see the Statue at Liberty island first). My camera was with me, and it was a beautiful day out on New York Harbor. I was snapping pictures all along the way.

Some photo ops are setups, and some are gifts. Witnessing these sailboats passing Ellis Island in one direction while our ferry was going the opposite way was a gift; I took several in a series, and this is my favorite (one of my favorite photos I've ever taken, really).

Sailing by Ellis Island. 6/3/2012 (unedited photo)

I'll never be the Photoshop wiz my husband is--the software, like his DSLR camera, intimidates me--but I do like playing around with photo-editing tools. My new favorite is PicMonkey, which helped me turn my original photo into the one below (also original, but in a different way).

Sailing by Ellis Island. 6/3/2012 (edited photo using PicMonkey)

The edit was cropped, color/exposure corrected, and makes use of at least one Effects filter (sadly, I did not note which effects I used, but I may have combined a "Basic" and "Camera Look"), Frames (Simple Edge), and Text. When I "monkey" around with a picture this much, I usually sign it, especially if I really like how it turned out--and I'm pretty fond of this one!

Friday Foto: Cuts Like a Knife

Posted on 05:00 by Guy
Tall Paul and I made our very first sojourn to the annual Renaissance Pleasure Faire this past weekend, and while we were there, I did something else for the first time. You might think that being one-quarter Sicilian would give me an affinity for handling knives (outside the kitchen). You would be wrong.

Preparing to throw a knife at the Ren Faire
Not the sharpest knife in the drawer, seriously. And I mean the actual knife. Go sit down.

I enhanced the focus on the flying knife to help you see it. I decided not to post the picture where it landed on the ground, along with all the other ones I threw. I totally throw like a girl, but I'll try again next year!

Friday Foto: Spring has Sprung!

Posted on 05:00 by Guy
I can never decide whether the seasons in Southern California don't exist at all, or are just out of whack with both natural and human calendars. Last weekend, just a few days before the vernal equinox and after a warmer, drier winter than normal, we had chilly rain and hail. Now we're looking at high temperatures in the mid-60s/low 70s into next week, with maybe some rain on Sunday.

But back in February, it seemed like we might not have any winter at all this year--it might as well have been spring already.

Friday Foto: Time Capsule! The Very First Post

Posted on 05:00 by Guy

I can't actually re-create my very first blog post. The original URL no longer exists, since I switched to a custom domain in 2008. I've changed templates a couple of times during the last five years, and Blogger doesn't even seem to have my original "Minima" template available any more.

However, using my stripped-down "test blog," I've come up with a decent facsimile of what went up in this space five years ago today. Clearly, I had a LONG way to go...

Yesterday I reflected, and on Sunday I'll celebrate with you all (hint: giveaways!), but on my actual fifth Blogiversary, I'm just putting up a virtual milestone.

Friday Foto: Horsing Around in Hollywood

Posted on 05:00 by Guy

(I did a little horsing around with this photo, too, as if you couldn't tell by the funky colors... Have you tried the editing tricks on Photoshop Express?)

I didn't realize that the LAPD had its own Mounties until I saw a couple of them on Franklin Avenue one afternoon last week. I snapped this photo with my phone when they were facing in the opposite direction.

(Yes, I was in my car, having just left work. Yes, technically I was driving...but I wasn't moving at the time. Sitting in traffic is the #1 participation sport in the Greater Los Angeles Area.)

Friday Fotos: Scenes from a SoCal Winter

Posted on 05:00 by Guy
West Los Angeles, early December 2011
Now that we're a few weeks away from the start of spring--at least according to the calendar--it can be told: even by Los Angeles standards, we haven't had much of a winter. It's been pretty dry for what's supposed to be our rainy season, and not very cold--not that it's ever truly cold this close to the coast, but we've had days at a time where temperatures have hit the 80s. It always feels a bit unfair to complain about our climate when so much of the country gets snowbound...but this is supposed to be sweaters-and-boots time! Global warming? Yeah, it might be a thing.
